My FireFox installation has failed to apply auto-updates for several months, requiring me to go and download the new setup.exe each time manually. After clicking 'Restart' to apply updates it closes but does not re-open. When manually starting it up again, it has not updated.
Finally got round to diagnosing the problem with Process Monitor, turns out for some mysterious reason it was hitting access denied when trying to create C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe.update_in_progress.lock, which already existed. Deleting this file resolved the issue.
I also deleted the update folder (see about:support - near the top 'Update Folder') - this did not resolve the issue but may have been part of the solution.
